The SURGE program is dedicated to enhancing diversity among STEM and social science fields contributing to disaster research. Therefore, mentors must be committed to this underlying goal and be willing to work with students from diverse backgrounds.

The Minority SURGE Capacity in Disasters project will focus on two grand challenges: the underrepresentation STEM racial and ethnic minorities in hazards and disaster research and the disproportionate impacts of disasters on underserved racial and ethnic minorities.

Q:Â How can a faculty member or professional assist in this project?
A: We have two ways for Faculty members and professionals to assist in the mission of this project. 1. Spread the word to eligible, talented students in your departments. 2. If you have time become a mentor, see more information about mentorship here.
Q: Does the SURGE initiative pay for student tuition?
A: Currently the SURGE initiative does not pay for tuition, fees, or books. However, participants will receive travel to workshops, conferences and on-site project for networking, professional and academic development, and hands-on experience -- related to hazards mitigation and disaster management.
Q: Do students have to be in a program dedicated to hazards mitigation or disaster research?
A: No, students do not have to be enrolled in a program dedicated to hazards mitigation or disaster research. Students should be interested in connecting their research or capstone interests to the hazards and disasters fields.
